Tips for Creating a Family Emergency Kit for Your Home

Make a family emergency kit if you’re a military family and on the move a lot — emergencies happen when you least expect them so having a kit ready will keep your family safe and sound. Here’s how:

  1. Assess Your Family: Start by thinking about your family’s needs, dietary restrictions, medical needs and the ages of your children. Make your kit fit those needs so everyone has what they need in an emergency.

  2. Must Haves: Your kit should have water (at least one gallon per person per day), non-perishable food, flashlight, batteries, first aid kit and any meds you may need. Don’t forget personal hygiene items like hand sanitizer and wet wipes.

  3. Important Papers: Keep copies of important documents like insurance policies, medical records and identification in a waterproof container so you can access them in an emergency.

  4. Communication Plan: Make a family communication plan that outlines how you will communicate with each other in an emergency. Include phone numbers for local emergency services, family members and your local military base.

  5. Update Your Kit: Review and update your kit regularly especially after big life changes like a move or a new addition to the family. Check expiration dates on food and meds to make sure everything is fresh and usable.
